McKinley Presbyterian Church and Foundation
What we believe
While individual Presbyterian churches differ to some extent, they are generally characterized by a strong commitment to education and social action, a respect for other religions (both Christian and non-Christian), and a democratic system of church governance. Rather than adhering to a single creed, Presbyterians look to a collection of "statements of faith" that provide a historical record of what Presbyterians have believed to be important throughout the ages. The Presbyterian Church USA has also developed extensive self-governance procedures which are set forth in its "Book of Order." For those interested in reading these various documents online, follow this link to the Presbyterian Church USA's web site and their presentation of the "Book of Confessions" and the "Book of Order."
At McKinley, we have a strong emphasis on religious education for both children and adults and are actively involved in addressing important social issues. As a congregation, we are strongly committed to inclusiveness and welcome all individuals, without exception, to worship with us.
As a Christian denomination, the Presbyterian church looks to the teachings of Jesus Christ and to the Bible for guidance. At McKinley, we believe in the trustworthiness of the Bible as the inspired word of God, although we do not interpret the Bible literally. Rather, we believe that the meaning of the Bible emerges from study of the text in historical context, in comparison to other parts of the Bible, and in light of other writings. As Presbyterians, we believe that individuals must follow their conscience in religious matters, although we also believe that God requires us to strive toward goodness in this process.
At McKinley, we celebrate the sacraments of baptism and communion. We offer an open communion table. You do not have to be a member or a Presbyterian to participate in communion at McKinley. Children of all ages are welcome to take communion.
In September 2000, the Session (governing body) of McKinley Church voted to become officially affiliated with The Center for Progressive Christianity. This action was taken to express some of our central beliefs and explain how they are translated into daily actions. Follow this link to read more about the Eight Points of Progressive Christianity.
